Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says:
(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.
(2) Everyone has the right to equal access to public service in his country.
(3) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.
The struggle for voting rights has always been central to the struggle for human rights, from the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements in our own backyard to democracy movements throughout the world. The ability of people to elect a government that is accountable to its citizens is an essential part of the movement to make the right to health a reality for all people.
The PHR Student Program is committed to building the powerful voice of health professional students to advocate for health and human rights on local, national and global levels. In order to effectively advocate for the right to health, you must also participate in the political process and exercise your right to vote. As everyone knows, the first step to doing that is making sure you are registered to vote. Unfortunately, many students are disenfranchised on Election Day because they did not register to vote during the busy first months of school.
That’s why the PHR Student Program has partnered with the New Voters Project to conduct non-partisan voter registration drives on medical, public health, nursing and undergraduate schools throughout the US. Through peer-to-peer interactions of students we’ll work to register hundreds of voters this fall and build our power as human rights advocates.
There are several ways to get involved:
